Back in December, multiple sources said that the New Orleans Hornets were going to change their name to the Pelicans. This will be in play as soon as the 2013-2014 season, and it’s all but confirmed now. Here are the latest from Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports:
The franchise that will be known as the New Orleans Pelicans next year. The franchise started playing in the 1988-89 NBA season as the Charlotte Hornets, in which they played 14 seasons in Charlotte, North Carolina before moving to New Orleans in 2001 and changing their name to the Hornets.
The name “Hornets” will be available next year, and it’s been rumored that the Charlotte Bobcats might be in play to bring the franchise their old nickname back.
