How Will Tottenham Hotspur Cope Without Jan Vertonghen?

Tottenham has been in the headlines for their attacking talents this season.

Both Harry Kane and Dele Alli have received most of the praise for the excellent campaign that Spurs are having. While these two players have been good, it is the defensive that has been the primary reason for helping the team be successful.

Their defensive record is the best in the Premier League, which just goes to show how much they have improved from the symbolic defending last season. The improvement has led to free sports betting tips putting them in the top three picks to win the title this year.

Since the arrival of Toby Alderweireld in the summer, Spurs have been rock solid at the back. His partnership with Vertonghen is seen by many as the best centre-back pairing in the Premier League.

Both players have started every single match in the league together so far this season. That is about to end though with Vertonghen reported to be out for up to eight weeks with an MCL injury.

Due to the tactical system that Pochettino has implemented at Spurs, the loss of Vertonghen should be more limited that in the past.

One of the key factors for their solid defence this season has been Eric Dier's move into a midfield holding place. This move has improved the defense significantly and will help to cover the loss of their star center back.

Now that the January transfer window is open, it gives Spurs the opportunity to buy another defender to cover Vertonghen`s absence. If they do dip their toes in the market, the price they are likely to pay will be inflated.

Pochettino is not keen on adding any new faces to the squad this January though as he does not want to risk damaging the team spirit. Spurs fans will hope that not signing another player is a betting system that works for the manager.

If any more injuries happen at central defense, it is likely to cost Spur greatly. In Vertonghen's absent, Kevin Wimmer is going to have to step in to replace him.

The four million summer signing so far has had just 15 minutes of first team football in the league so far. If a title push is going to happen, he will need to fit in quickly.

If Alderweireld or Wimmer get injured, Eric Dier will be able to switch roles and play as a center back. It would affect the team's balance though and could damage their chances of finishing in the top four.

Spurs are hopeful that Vertonghen can return in time for the London Derby against Arsenal on the 5th of March. If he can return by then putting money on them finishing in the top four is surely going to be a betting system that works.

Below are the games that he will miss:

FA Cup 4th Round at Colchester (Jan. 30)
at Norwich City (Feb. 2)
vs. Watford (Feb. 6)
at Manchester City (Feb. 14)
Europa League Round of 32 at Florentina (Feb. 18)
Europa League Round of 32 vs. Fiorentina (Feb. 25)
vs. Swansea City (Feb. 28)
at West Ham (March 2)

Most sports betting tips sites have Spurs nailed on to finish in a Champions League place this season. If they can keep their injuries to a minimum, there is no reason they can not challenge for the title this season.
