Former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Byron Scott has told the press that he thought he would be given more time to improve the team’s performance instead of getting fired at the end of this season.

The Lakers chose not to renew the contract of Byron Scott after he lead the team to their two worst years in the franchise’s history. The team ended the season with a score line of 17-65 this season, losing four more games than the season before.

In his first public interview since being sacked, he told ESPN that he had been told that he was going to be given more opportunity to turn the team’s fortunes around. He said, “Our conversation a couple of years ago was, 'This is a rebuilding process. It's going to take two to three years”

The LA Lakers told fans that they would look to replace Scott as soon as possible, so they took the rare step of starting the interview process before the season has officially ended.

One of the first candidates rumored for the job was Luke Walton, who is no stranger to LA Lakers fans as he played for the side for over a decade between 2003-13.

He himself has experienced the success that most fans come to expect of the Lakers, winning two NBA Championships whilst with the team. Since then, he has won a third NBA championship as assistant coach of the Golden State Warriors last year.

Now just a few weeks after the sacking of Scott, earlier this month Walton signed what is thought to be a $25 million contract to be head coach for the Lakers. Whilst this will be bad news for Golden State fans, the upside is that he has only agreed to take the job at the end of the Warrior’s season.

The loss of Scott to the Lakers at this point would have been a huge loss to Golden State. Unlike the Lakers, the Golden State Warriors are currently still battling it out in the end of season playoffs.

The Warriors are currently 6/5 odds on favorites to win the NBA Championship this year at bookmakers like Betway. But those odds could soon change as the playoffs go on.

If you are looking to put money on the Warriors this season, then you’ll want to regularly check the Betway website for the latest news on a possible move and see what that does to the odds.

Despite his mind maybe starting to wander onto what could happen next year, it seems Walton is still extremely focused on the season with the team he’s about to apart.

The Warriors are currently leading their best-of-seven series against Portland. The team has looked strong in every game so far despite losing their star guard Stephen Curry with a sprained knee, but who ended up returning in Game 5 to lead the team with 40 points in an overtime win.
