This is part one of a five part series where I break down my top 5 prospects in the Red Sox organization.
My number one prospect as of now in the Red Sox organization, is a 19 year old by the name of Ryan Westmoreland.
Ryan has blazing speed. I compare him to Jacoby Ellsbury at this stage in his career for those Red Sox fans. Hes a phenomenal fielder, but had surgery on his shoulder in the off season, so now he is the DH. But expect him to start playing CF again the the next week or so.
Right now is in the class-A affiliate of the Red Sox, the Lowell Spiners. I have season tickets so I have seem him play alot.
Hes a left handed hitter with an open stance, with great contact and great power agaisnt lefties. Which most top prospects dont have. Hes eighth in the New York Penn League in steals with 14, and his fellow teamamte, Derrik Gibson, who I have ranked as 8, leads the league wih 20 and is 4 away from the all time mark in NY Penn League.
Ryan has a battign average of just below .300, and has 6 hR's and 27 RBI. I know that doesnt sound like alot but the team plays below 80 games a year and Ryan has been leading off for more than 3/4 of the games so far. Hes also only 19. So for a lead off hitter who is 19, those are great stats.
Hes also been in the news a bit. He was a part of the trade the Red Sox offered the Blue Jays for Roy Halladay.
I reccomend you keep an eye on him in the next few years as i predict he will be in the MLB around the time when he is 23,24.
