STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn State's Joe Paterno coached from the sideline for Saturday's game against Eastern Michigan, the Hall of Famer's first appearance on the field this season since getting hurt in practice last month.
The 84-year-old Paterno injured his right shoulder and pelvis after receiver Devon Smith accidentally crashed into him during preseason drills Aug. 7. Paterno coached the first three games this season from the press box.
A stool was stationed on the sideline near the 50-yard line.
Wearing his familiar khakis and jet-black sneakers, Paterno arrived at Beaver Stadium on Saturday carrying a forearm crutch on his arm. But he did not use it as he walked into the locker room.
Paterno is major college football's winningest coach with 403 victories.
