Boston College is currently undergoing a huge rebuilding process under the watchful eye of a new coaching staff. With virtually a new team this year, the Eagles are in the midst of remaking their basketball program. These days, college basketball is such a guard oriented game, and teams like to stock up on ballhandlers and floor generals. With that said, Boston College landed their second player in their 2012 recruiting class, and second point guard, in New Hampton (NH) lead guard Olivier Hanlan.
The 6?-3?, 185 pound Hanlan is a native of Canada at New Hampton. He ran with the Albany City Rocks in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League, as is considered the 6th best player in the Canada’s 2012 class, according to Canadian scouting service Flagrant Fouls. Hanlan was also among the better uncommitted point guards available at this time.
Hanlan is joined by Torrey Pines (CA) point guard Joe Rahon in the Eagles’ recruiting class so far. Last year, the only pure point guard that Boston College secured was undersized, 5?-9? SoCal native Jordan Daniels. With that said, Hanlan and Rahon could conceivably each play both guards slots. Rahon is a serviceable shooter, while Hanlan excels at getting to the basket and using his length. Both players have good basketball IQ, and are good passers.
There are certainly minutes to be had in the backcourt at Boston College, and there’s little doubt that Hanlan will be in the mix to play early, and could compete to start, for the Eagles. He already is playing tough competition in the New England prep school ranks, and though that doesn’t immediately translate to high-level ACC hoops, it could give him an edge in the battle for backcourt minutes against other high-major hoops novices next year.
