Organizations and people are always looking for new ways to honor those who deserve it. The Detroit Tigers have two seats in their stadium reserved for late great Coach Sparky Anderson and legendary broadcaster Ernie Harwell. All the Chicago teams put up statues in or around the stadiums for the all time greats. Brixton, England has definitely upped the ante both figuratively and literally for some of their favorite heroes, including Bulls Forward Luol Deng.
Deng will be given the honor of his face being on the Brixton 5 pound bill, along with feature activist Lenford Kwesi Garrison on the 1 pound note, WWII secret agent Violette Szabo on the 20 pound note, and David Bowie on the 10 pound note. The Brixton Pound is complementary currency to the pound sterling, which is explained better here then I can do it.
Deng was born in the Sudan but raised in Brixton, South London where former NBA player Manute Bol taught him the game of basketball.
“I am honored to be featured on the new Brixton Pound notes,” said Deng on his foundation’s website. “I grew up as a young teenager player basketball for the Brixton Topcats which marked the beginning of my career. So it is with great pleasure that I am helping to support the local community that played a vital part in getting where I am today.”
