With Hines Ward no longer returning, the Steelers are looking to a new class of wide receivers for the future. Their main man, Mike Wallace, has been in rumors lately in that he may not return to Pittsburgh.For the Steelers, retaining their number one receiver is a must.
"We want Mike to finish his career with the Steelers," Steelers' GM, Kevin Colbert, told reporters Thursday at the NFL combine in Indianapolis. "We think he's only scratched the surface of what he can do."
Among the teams that have been interested in Wallace are the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals.
It will be tough for them to get Wallace back, as the team is $8 million over the cap and franchise-tagging him would cost them over $9 million. Wallace already knows that he may not return.
"(Pittsburgh is) where I would like to be, but we all know that it is a business and you have certain things you have to handle," Wallace told SiriusXM NFL Radio. "So if I have to go elsewhere, you know Pittsburgh will always be in my heart, but I have to do what I have to do."
Wallace is coming off a solid year, where he hauled in 72 catches for 1,193 yards along with eight touchdowns.
