According to ESPN's Buster Olney, Ryan Zimmerman has agreed to a six-year, $100-million extension with the Washington Nationals. It was announced today, but there are no details on the financial terms.
The annual value of his contract is worth $16.7 million, just behind Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees, who has $27.5 million.
Zimmerman's contract was going to expire after the 2013 season, but the extension could pull him up to 2020 if he agrees to the seventh-year option. He is currently due $26 million for the next two years due to his current contract and can make up to $150 million once everything is set and done.
"Ryan Zimmerman is an exceptional talent and individual. He is a role model on the field, in the clubhouse and in the community. He has been the face of the Washington Nationals since baseball was returned to Washington. We are absolutely thrilled that Ryan will continue to help us build our team in a winning direction," Nationals owner Theodore Lerner said in a statement Sunday.
Zimmerman had injury problems last season, but was able to finish with a .289 batting-average with twelve home runs and 49 RBIs.
Congrats Ryan! I look forward to seeing what you can do next season.
