With Hines Ward having $4 million left in the last two years of his contract, the Pittsburgh Steelers are considering to make a decision on the 35-year-old wide receiver this off-season. Rumor had it earlier this week that the Steelers may not keep Ward.
"I don't normally like to respond to rumors, but as I've said all along, I want to finish my career with the Pittsburgh Steelers," Ward posted Saturday on his Facebook page, referring to reports of his possible retirement.
Ward lost his starting job last season and wasn't very productive, only producing 46 catches for 381 yards and two touchdowns. Ward said he wants to play for Pittsburgh for his whole career.
Sadly, that won't be happening for the two-time Super Bowl champion. NFL Network reported today that the organization won't be retaining the 14-year-pro. This brings up several different scenarios as Ward can choose to retire, or still play in the league.
I'm not so sure of what teams would be interested, but there will obviously be some. However, he won't have the same role as he has had for his whole career. Look to see Ward turning more into a role of a slot receiver or a fourth-string man.
Ward currently stands with a very nice Hall-of-Fame resume: 1,000 catches for 12,083 yards with 85 touchdowns. The multiple Super Bowl titles help a ton as well.
