We now why the Jets quickly fizzled out of the Peyton Manning sweepstakes. It’s because they pulled a fast one on us all.

On Friday night, Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum called a press conference, announcing the team has signed incumbent quarterback Mark Sanchez to a contract extension.

As with Tannenbaum, he didn’t disclose the terms, though reports are indicating it’s a three-year extension, through 2016, worth $40.5 million — an average of $13.5 million per year.

It’s a bit of a puzzling move, especially considering Sanchez had two-years remaining on his old deal.

ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini thinks the Jets used Manning as leverage in negotiations with Sanchez’s camp, which is a very plausible scenario.

It can also be interpreted as a reward, more or less. Granted he just came off an unconvincing and sometimes dreadful third-year campaign, but the team was on the verge of turning him into a David Carr-type, completely ruining his confidence with the beating he’s endured, both on and off-the-field.

Amid whirlwinds of rumors suggesting his release, their reported courting of Manning did nothing to help repair Sanchez’s psyche going into a put up or shut up year.
