Mario Williams has scored some big cash as he signed to a six-year, $100 million contract with $50 million guaranteed. The guaranteed money makes it the richest for any defensive player in NFL history.
"This is a great day for the Buffalo community, the Bills organization and our fans!" tweeted Bills CEO, Russ Brandon.
Other players shared their thoughts on the deal, like linebacker Nick Barnett ("Welcome Mario!!! Bills d is not playing games homie!!!") and wide receiver Stevie Johnson ("I Love it! S/O to Them Buffalo Guys wearing The Suits for Making Things Happen this OffSeason! Let's Continue to Build! Welcome #SuperMario!").
Williams was drafted by the Houston Texans in 2006 and since has become a force on defense, totaling 53 sacks in six seasons. He missed a lot of team last year, but he is healthy again.
He started his first five seasons as defensive end before Houston made their switch to a 3-4 with new defensive coordinator, Wade Phillips. That sent Williams to play outside linebacker, which he played well at and will do much of the same in Buffalo.
Williams joins Calvin Johnson as the guys who have broken records in guaranteed money. Johnson excelled them all, breaking the record for the richest guaranteed money in NFL history with $60 million.
I look forward to seeing what Mario can do in Buffalo next season.
