The Cleveland Browns so far have been having a pretty good draft.
They were able to secure the position in getting Trent Richardson, trading up one spot to get him at No. 3 overall.
They were looking to draft Baylor wide receiver Kendall Wright next, but he came to Tennessee Titans at No. 20. Instead, they drafted 28-year-old quarterback Brandon Weeden at the 22nd overall pick.
This obviously now causes a conflict in Cleveland with their quarterback situation. According to ESPN, the Browns are looking to trade away Colt McCoy in favor of Weeden. Honestly, this decision by Cleveland makes absolutely no sense.
First, they're dumping an unproven 28-year-old rookie quarterback for a 25-year-old who is continuing to improve and already has two years under his belt. Plus, if you take a look at his numbers from last season, they weren't so bad.
Sure, they're not great when you look at it: 2,733 yards, 57.2 completion percentage, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, 74.6 rating; but imagine putting those numbers up with a terrible run game, wide receivers who are always dropping balls, a young inexperienced coaching staff, and a poor offensive line.
Plus, with all of it, he did it with barely any preparation to start off the season, since there was a lockout. If Cleveland is going through with trading him, they better get a receiver return, something they have been missing for a long time.
It's crazy, if you ask me. I bet the Browns took a good look at Weeden's Sports Science video this past week, which got them real interested. In the video, Weeden was seen with amazing accuracy, hitting a clay pigeon right on the money.
"I wasn't concerned about his age," said Browns coach Pat Shurmur. "I was impressed with his maturity and production on tape. We became very fond of him."
Weeden wanted to be drafted by the Browns all along.
"I was hoping that this would happen. This night went just as I hoped."
Weeden was looking forward towards competing with McCoy during training camp, having strong confidence that he would beat him.
Now his wish is complete, because with the Browns trading him away, Weeden is officially the starter.
