After only playing 82 games in four seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers, the team cut him during the trade deadline as his knee issues continue to go on. Oden had to undergo another type of surgery on his knee this season, forcing him to miss the rest of the season.
It was his fifth major surgery on his knee for his NBA career.
However, Oden isn't ready to call it quits and doesn't see himself as a bust yet.
"Everyone is quick to talk bust, but put themselves in his shoes," says Oden's agent, Mike Conley. "He has gone through a lot as a young man and he is continuing to work to get back. For him to come back is going to be a remarkable perseverance on his behalf.
"No, he's not retiring. The only way that would happen is if he was forced to and I don't see that happening. He's dedicated to making sure he's back on the court as soon as possible."
The 24-year-old still has at least another ten years of playing time in the NBA if he is able to get healthy again. Oden has missed parts of two seasons and was forced to miss two-whole seasons.
For his career, he averaged nine points and seven boards. However, when he was healthy, Oden was a monster and looked like he would have a bright future ahead of him if only the injuries didn't get to him.
However, other players have had success with their NBA career despite big injuries to them early in their career. Look at Grant Hill now. He had major knee problems, but now is able to play in the NBA well enough into his 40's. Who says Oden can't do the same?
Some teams have reportedly been interested. One team that has been out there are the Miami Heat. The Heat can't seem to find their answer at center, as they have been switching from time to time between guys like Joel Anthony and even Eddy Curry. Adding a healthy Oden would be a steal for them.
The Indiana Pacers have also appeared in talks. Indiana could try starting Oden at power forward to pair up with 7'2" Roy Hibbert in the frontcourt. Indiana is already great on the boards, and with a healthy Oden, they would be unstoppable.
I still believe Oden has a chance to succeed. I really wish the best to him, and I hope he succeeds.
