For a while now, the New Orleans Saints have been working long and hard on trying to find the right contract for quarterback Drew Brees. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the Saints are now closing in on what it appears to be a long-term deal for Brees.
Owner Tom Benson talked about the Brees situation during his press conference on his purchase of the New Orleans Hornets, saying he has been in talks with the franchise quarterback.
"(I) told him what was going on and he was very excited about it," Benson said. "He's due in next week and we're close (to a new deal)."
Brees has been in talks with the Saints for over a year about a new deal. Brees is looking for a salary which is like how a top-five QB is paid.
"You know how those things work, and it just takes a little more time, a little patience and we've got a few other things going on with the draft and players that's keeping us real busy," Benson said. "We haven't forgotten about him. We work on it every day.
"As I told you, I talked to him personally this morning. He felt very good about us getting involved with this club, with the Hornets. I think that (contract for Brees) will be done shortly."
Brees is coming off a record-setting year, where he had thrown for 5,476 yards, shattering Dan Marino's record.
Look to see a big deal coming his way.
