Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle, who led the team to its first ever championship, is staying with the team.

Owner Mark Cuban didn't give out details of the deal, but hinted that the contract is for at least as long as his initial four-year deal with the Mavericks.

“We are excited that Rick will be back with the Mavericks for at least the next four years,” Cuban said. “He is a proven winner, a great teacher and a coach that will help the Mavericks improve as a team and as an organization.”

Carlisle has a record of 198-114 in the regular season as the coach in Dallas. This is a great move for the Mavericks. They need stability for a while with key pieces like Jason Kidd and Jason Terry possibly leaving in free agency.

Now, I expect Dallas to look forward to 12:01 on July 1 to try to bring back hometown star Deron Williams. Williams and Dirk Nowitzki alongside each other could be exactly what Dallas needs to get back to the NBA Finals.

Cuban and Carlisle will have to put in a great pitch to Williams, who is currently in Russia with his current owner Mikhail Prokorov of the Brooklyn Nets.

Rick Carlisle is now in Dallas for a while and Williams could help him win that championship that the Mavericks are desperately itching to get back.
