Sources close to the NCAA case involving former Miami booster Nevin Shapiro say allegations may be brought up sometime this week, even as soon as Monday. The beginning of the end is about to come out at UM.
It has been two years since the NCAA began with this investigation against UM regarding Shapiro and his relationship with over 100 student-athletes (most athletes being football players between 2002-2010). Shapiro is now serving a 20-year prison-term for a $930 million Ponzi-scheme.
Shapiro has come out as saying such benefits to athletes were prostitutes, cash, entertainment in his million-dollar home and yacht, trips to expensive restaurants, jewelry and bounties for on-field plays. All of these were documented in 2011 by Yahoo! Sports.
Shapiro even went as far as turning in 114 names to the NCAA, including Kellen Winslow, Vince Wilfork, Jonathan Vilma, Willis McGahee and Devin Hester, just to name a few.
Allegations will be sent to the university and those involved will receive separate notices, according to the allegations as well. UM does not have to go public with the allegations, seeing as how it is a private school, but it would be unlikely and a wrong move if they were to keep it on the down-low.
Once the university receives the allegations, it will have 90 days to reply in writing to the NCAA. Once the 90 days are up, the NCAA sets a hearing for the Committee on infractions. Once the hearings are over, the NCAA will report any sanctions 8-12 weeks later.
Miami has already self-imposed itself the past two years for football. More news to come as the story continues to develop.
