Nikola Pekovic January 2013

The Minnesota Timberwolves injury situation just got worst. Starting center Nikola Pekovic will be out of the lineup for 7-10 days with a right thigh contusion, the team announced Friday. Pekovic suffered the injury in the third quarter of last night’s 90-77 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers in a collision with Blake Griffin.

The team also lost guard Alexey Shved to a sprained ankle in the fourth quarter. Both injuries are huge due to the fact that they were playing well and the team is missing many players, such as Kevin Love, Brandon Roy, Chase Budinger and Malcolm Lee.

Pekovic, 27, was one of Minnesota’s brightest spots, leading the team in both scoring (16 PPG) and rebounding (8.6 RPG) while also enjoying a healthy season, only missing two of the first 36 games.

The Timberwolves have lost five games in a row and find themselves with a record of 16-20, which is 10th in the Western Conference. Just like last season, Minnesota could find themselves missing the playoffs due to key injuries to their players.
