The new stadium will reportedly cost $672 million, hold 42,000 seats. It will be located at the interchange of Atlanta’s two busiest interstates: I-75 and I-285.
Team ownership decided not to renew another lease at Turner Field, which was originally built for the 1996 Summer Olympics.
In a statement, the team said: “The reason for moving is simple. The current location has certain issues that are insurmountable and will only become more problematic over the years. These fundamental issues involve how you, our fans, access Turner Field. There is a lack of consistent mass transportation, a lack of sufficient parking and a lack of direct access to interstates.”
Turner Field is newer than 14 of the 29 other current stadiums, and is 84 years younger than Fenway Park. You don’t see anyone complaining about Fenway these days.
Braves president John Schuerholz said, “The new stadium, we believe, will be one of the most magnificent ever built. It will thrive with action and vitality 365 days a year, not just game days."
Come 2017, the Atlanta area will have two new stadiums opening at the same time. The Falcons are also scheduled to open a new $1.2 billion stadium as well that year.
