Greg Oden had the potential to be one of the best in the game, and the Portland Trail Blazers saw that when selecting the big man as the No. 1 pick of the 2007 NBA Draft. Of course, things didn't pan out due to injuries, and Oden will forever be remembered for being picked ahead of Kevin Durant.
Oden says he's comfortable where he is at now being a benchwarmer on the Miami Heat. He also acknowledged that he wasn't able to play up to what a No. 1 pick was supposed to. In an interview with Grantland, Oden himself said he is one of the biggest busts in NBA history.
"I’m over all of that. I know I’m one of the biggest busts in NBA history and I know that it’ll only get worse as Kevin Durant continues doing big things," Oden said. "It’s frustrating that my body can’t do what my mind wants it to do sometimes. But worrying or complaining about it isn’t going to fix anything.
"I wish the circumstances would let me play more, but I certainly don’t regret coming back, and I don’t regret signing with the Heat."
It's honestly sad seeing this quote from Greg. It's not his fault that it had to be this way. The man just didn't have good knees. He was pretty dominant on the floor when he played, but he was never able to catch a break due to health.
I strongly believe Oden would be one of the top centers in the game right now had he been able to stay healthy. It hurts knowing Oden feels this way, but it's a feel-good story that he's able to play again after being out of the league for several years.
It will be even more heartwarming if he ends up winning a ring in the process during this postseason with Miami.
