Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert hyped up his fans big time with his infamous letter about LeBron James after he left for the Miami Heat. One of the main things in the letter was when Gilbert guaranteed that the Cavs would win a title before James.
That didn't work out so well, though. James helped lead the Heat to four straight NBA Finals appearances, winning two of them. Meanwhile in all those four years, the Cavs fell to mediocrity.
James, of course, is now back in Cleveland and forgave Gilbert for his letter. Gilbert claims it was wrong of him to write such a letter, but also added how dumb it was of him to make such a guarantee like that.
He tells the Detroit Free Press:
“It really is an incredible relief. You can do 999 out of 1,000 things right, and the one wrong thing is who you become. It was a burden. But I couldn't blame anybody else.”
He admits writing the Cavs would win an NBA title before James “was stupid. How could I be so dumb as to write that?”
Now we'll see if James can deliver a title for Cleveland.
