In the end, Steve Patterson simply wasn’t an Austin type of guy.
Texas president Gregory Fenves has fired athletic director Steve Patterson, according to the Austin-American Statesman.
Fenves and Patterson are meeting Tuesday morning, the Statesman learned.
It could bring an end to a tumultuous 22-month journey for the athletic department during which fans grew outraged over higher ticket prices and Patterson battled the perception that his cool demeanor simply does not fit UT’s style.
When Patterson lost the confidence of his coaches, the Houston source said, that proved to be the last straw.

According to the report, former Texas linebacker Mike Perrin will take over as interim athletic director until the school hires Patterson’s successor.
Patterson hired both football coach Charlie Strong and basketball coach Shaka Smart during his brief time at Texas.
