Could Dwight Howard really end up being the Terrell Owens of the NBA? The mercurial NBA star has racked up countless accolades during his 13-year career so far, but he’s not going to ever be remembered as the greatest teammate to ever come through The Association.
During a sitdown with The Undefeated’s Marc J. Spears, Howard was adamant that he definitely belongs in the Hall of Fame when his playing days are over.
“No doubt," he said. “It’s kind of got swept under the rug because the perception of all the things that happened in Orlando.”
He could have a point, because the perception of Howard being selfish and a malcontent started with his messy exit from Orlando and horrible relationships with teammates Kobe Bryant and James Harden.
Like Owens, Howard is cognitive of how he’s perceived in the media, but doesn’t seemed phased by it.
“All of the media stuff. If you look at basketball itself, and I don’t ever talk about myself, but winning three Defensive Player of the Year trophies has never been done,” Howard said. “Leading the league in rebounding six straight years. All that kind of stuff, I think that deserves it.
“I want to get to 20 years.”
If we’re judging off numbers alone, Howard has similar or even better numbers than Hall of Famer and former coach Kevin McHale. All the other things will likely determine how long Howard waits, or if he gets in at all.
